A new survey has revealed that security, interoperability and connectivity are the top concerns held by businesses regarding the Internet of Things (IoT).

The IoT Developer Trends 2017 survey is the result of a collaboration between the Eclipse IoT Working Group, Agile-IoT EU, the IoT Council and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Some 46.7 per cent of respondents said that security was their top concern, while 24.4 per cent named interoperability and 21.4 per cent said connectivity was the biggest concern.

The survey also found that Java and C are the primary IoT programming languages, while there is also significant usage of C++, Python and JavaScript.

Meanwhile, another survey – conducted by the Business Performance Innovation Network and the CMO Council in partnership with the IoT Institute and Nerdery – found that 90 per cent of the respondents say that the Industrial IoT (IIoT) is an area of strategic focus for their organisation but only nine per cent say their industry has begun widespread adoption.

Some 61 per cent of the 350 global executives who responded to the Impact of Connectedness on Competitiveness survey said there is a significant skills gap when it comes to the IoT, but they are hopeful for the future.

A total of 70 per cent said their ability to develop and deploy IIoT technologies is very good or improving. However, only seven per cent said they have a clear vision and implementation strategy for the IIoT.

The report stated: “Most executives seem to believe they cannot afford to sit on the sidelines, waiting to see how IIoT shakes out, lest they pay a hefty price in competitive disadvantage and lost opportunity.

“Indeed, based on the latest research into executive sentiments, it’s clear that most business and government leaders see tremendous opportunity and impact potential in just the next few years, and many increasingly fear being left behind.”
