Vodafone and Telefonica form 4G partnership

Vodafone is set to join forces with Telfonica, the owners of O2, to share the creation of a 4G network in the UK in a bid to boost the coverage and speed for the rollout.

The deal will help both firms cope with the fierce competition in the 4G market and current regulatory pressures.

It will also help O2 and Vodafone, ranked second and third respectively in Britain, compete with Everything Everywhere, which runs the Orange and T-Mobile brands, to have the best UK network.

Vodafone UK chief executive Guy Laurence said: "This will create two stronger players who will compete with each other and with other operators to bring the benefits of mobile internet services to consumers and businesses across the country."

Perhaps most importantly, he noted that the collaborating with improve the service that customers receive and bring the rollout of the 4G network forward.

The announcement follows similar deals across Europe, where operators are looking to improve their 4G offerings to customers while maintaining their independent brands.
