UK leading Wi-Fi boom

The UK is continuing to set the pace in terms of Wi-Fi hotspots, according to industry experts Informa Telecoms & Media.

A new report by the firm has revealed that more than 18 million hotspots currently exist in the UK, just a decade after Wi-Fi was introduced, with this number set to rise to 21 million by 2015.

The growth of Wi-Fi hotspots in the UK is beginning to change the behaviour of business users, with 26 per cent of Wi-Fi activity involving the checking of emails on the move.

BT Wi-Fi chief executive, Andy Baker, said that the proliferation of smartphones and tablets has made connecting to the internet through Wi-Fi hotspots even more important.

Informa Telecoms & Media, principal analyst, Thomas Wehmeier, said: "For today's connected consumer, Wi-Fi is an essential way to connect and communicate via an increasing number of smart devices, from the smartphone to the tablet and, in the future, to virtually any consumer electronic device."
