The amount of data we are generating is increasing exponentially

The amount of data being created and used by organisations is only going to continue to grow, according to an expert.

Dominic Pollard, editor at the Big Data Insight Group, said that the information we generate and store is "increasing exponentially".

"Exactly how much by is a matter of contrasting stats and figures, but one of the most commonly stated facts is that today we generate as much electronic data every single day as everything that had been created prior to 2003," he added.

This 'big data' is being used in every walk of life, from loyalty schemes and product placement in supermarkets, to simulating the effects of changing components in racing cars and launching a new music band to a certain demographic.

Mr Pollard went on to say that every minute of every day, we are uploading 48 hours of video footage to YouTube, making 47,000 downloads from Apple's App Store and sending over 200 million emails and 100,000 tweets.
