SMBs account for the biggest increase in formal BYOD program launches

The workplace is set to be further defined by the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) movement over the course of 2014, with small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) at its heart.

That is the verdict of a new report released by International Data Corporation (IDC), which claims that SMBs are embracing the use of BYOD in ever-increasing numbers.

The study, the U.S. 2014 SMB Corporate-Owned and BYOD Mobile Device Survey, also found that smaller firms are now responsible for the most significant increases in the growth of BYOD programs being launched, with more and more organisations beginning to recognise the benefits that come with such an approach.

Employees can now work remotely giving them a greater level of flexibility, which can help to keep up morale and staff retention, while crucially maintaining that productivity levels remain high.

Mobile device management tools and techniques have also improved in recent times, with an increasing number of of companies finding it easier to integrate all aspects of BYOD into a unified communications program.

IDC analyst Chris Chute, research director of the firm's Global SMB Cloud and Mobility Practice and co-author of the study, said: "Small businesses have seen the most growth in BYOD device uptake and have responded by implementing policies that govern how those devices are used.

"This is a marked change from only a year ago when close to half of small firms cited having a zero-access BYOD stance. Now, with the availability of hosted software and easy-to-implement mobile solutions, SMB IT managers feel much more comfortable allowing personal devices access to internal IT resources."

The phenomenon of BYOD shows no sign of easing its momentum any time soon, so it seems almost certain that more SMBs as well as larger enterprises will need to ensure that they have the right security measures in place in order to make sure they are properly prepared.
