Small businesses ‘apathetic’ to data security

Small businesses in the UK and around the world are "apathetic" to data security, according to one industry expert.

Tony McDowell, managing director of, said that hacking is continuing to grow as more and more people become aware of the potential of IT.

He explained that the money-making potential of hacking into a business' network or mobile devices is leading to an increase in cybercrime.

Mr McDowell noted that small businesses are the worst culprits when it comes to failing to protect themselves from hacks.

Businesses that have implemented BYOD (bring your own device) have also recently been encouraged to boost their mobile security measures as sensitive data is often contained on smartphones and tablets.

If these devices are lost or stolen then there is a risk that the information could fall into the wrong hands.

Full data encryption or mobile device management, which offers a remote disable or wipe facility, can both be used to protect data and avoid a costly leak.
