Nokia has announced it has updated its Intelligent Management Platform for All Connected Things (IMPACT). The company said that this would make it easier for customers to deploy new services and business models for key Internet of Things (IoT) “vertical applications, including smart parking, smart lighting and transportation/automotive”.

The IMPACT IoT platform was developed to address “a fragmented and complex IoT ecosystem, comprised of disparate applications and devices”.

It comes as the company has been focusing on the development of 5G technologies, which will go hand-in-hand with the ever-expanding IoT. The company has worked with several other organisations to push forward these advancements.

According to Nokia, IMPACT gives “communication service providers, enterprises and governments a secure, standards-based platform on which to build and scale new IoT services”.

It was developed to manage data collection, event processing, device management, data analytics and contextualisation, as well as applications enablement for any device, any protocol and across any application. It also features “robust, multi-layered security across the platform to safeguard data, identities and devices”.

The new features of the Nokia IMPACT IoT platform include a variety of different applications. This includes NB-IoT and LoRa connectivity, which builds on existing Lightweight M2M (LWM2M) and Category M1 (CAT-M1) device support, and interfaces to both licensed NB-IoT and unlicensed LoRa networks provide customers with additional IoT network efficiency improvements via low-power wide area networks (LPWAN).

IMPACT will also provide new functionality for a range of IoT applications by automatically detecting anomalies in video feeds in real time, such as traffic accidents, speeding vehicles and unauthorised entry into secure locations, and triggering alerts for further action. This application is powered by Nokia Bell Labs’ machine learning algorithms.

The smart parking application has also been intended to allow municipalities to better manage their inventories, resulting in more efficient use of parking spaces, reduced traffic and pollution. It will also provide drivers with real-time information on parking space availability and streamlines payment processes.

IMPACT will offer a smart lighting application. This will enable municipalities to optimise electricity use and reduce costs through real-time management, automatically detecting lighting issues and failures to help ensure maximum uptime.

Vehicle applications are also provided by the updated platform. They will enable predictive maintenance, fuel efficiency, supply chain optimisation and geo-fencing solutions triggered by vehicle data, including fuel levels, speed and GPS location.
