Dell has announced it is set to make a $1 billion (£761 million) investment into Internet of Things (IoT) technology, which will include the create of a new division within the company to lead research and development in the sector.

At an event in New York, chief executive Michael Dell stated that IoT is "fundamentally changing" how people live, how the world works and how businesses operate. He noted that the technology, along with artificial intelligence, is helping to create a single, interdependent ecosystem that encompasses all aspects of technology.

"Dell Technologies is leading the way for our customers with a new distributed computing architecture that brings IoT and artificial intelligence together in one, interdependent ecosystem from the edge to the core to the cloud. The implications for our global society will be nothing short of profound," he said.

The technology firm's investments in IoT will include 'Project Nautilus', which is a software solution to enables the ingestion and querying of data streams from IoT gateways in real time. This data can then be archived for deeper analytics.

Meanwhile, Project Fire is a hyper converged platform that is part of the VMware Pulse family of IoT solutions that will enables businesses to roll-out IoT use cases faster and have consistent infrastructure software across all parts of their network.

Project Herd will also focus on analytics for geographically dispersed data, which is increasingly important for conducting deep learning on datasets that cannot be moved due to their size, or as a result of privacy and regulatory requirements.

The new IoT Division will be headed by chief technology officer at VMware Ray O'Farrell and will be tasked with orchestrating and managing the development of IoT products and services across the company.

Mr O'Farrell said: "Our new IoT Division will leverage the strength across all of Dell Technologies family of businesses to ensure we deliver the right solution – in combination with our vast partner ecosystem – to meet customer needs and help them deploy integrated IoT systems with greater ease."
