BYOD trend exposes enterprise IT

The bring your own device (BYOD) trend is continuing to grow at a pace, but a new survey has revealed it comes with a range of security risks.

A Fortinet poll asked 3,800 active employees in their 20s about their opinion of BYOD, its impact on their work environment and their attitude towards IT security.

A third of respondents said they would contravene a company's security policy that prevents them from using personal devices for work purposes.

While 42 per cent of the respondents believed potential data loss and exposure to malicious IT threats to be the dominant risk, this awareness of the risk does not prevent those workers from bypassing corporate policies.

Patrice Perche, vice president of international sales and support for Fortinet, said: "The survey clearly reveals the great challenge faced by organisations to reconcile security and BYOD."

He added that firms must take a multi-layered approach to the security challenges of BYOD.
