RIM announce their iPad Killer – the BlackBerry PlayBook

DevCon 2010, the BlackBerry developer conference kicked off with an announcement from RIM that they are launching an ‘enterprise tablet’ in early 2011. Focused on professionals, the tablet will certainly pack a punch with a 7″ screen, light weight and a new BlackBerry Tablet OS. Loaded with Flash and HTML 5 functionality, the new operating system will allow the tablet to provide a full internet experience.

One of the really clever features announced in the forthcoming PlayBook is the compatibility with an existing BlackBerry device. Rather than replace the user’s BlackBerry, RIM have designed the PlayBook to work as an extension to the handheld device, providing large screen access to emails, calendar, tasks and documents or other content accessible via the smartphone, whilst retaining the existing BlackBerry security model inherent in the devices today.

Arrow is really interested in this tablet development from RIM and we look forward to testing and making available the PlayBook model when it is launched next year. Fuller specifications and pricing will be available nearer the launch date.
