O2 launches 4G network trial in London

Having the latest smartphone is all well and good but no matter how brilliant its display or how many processors it has, it’s essentially useless without a decent data connection.

O2 has just switched on the first 4G (or LTE – Long Term Evolution) network in London. 4G is the next evolution of mobile data and, as the name suggests, picks up where 3G (and 2G before it) left off.

Probably the biggest benefit of 4G is that it will be upwards of 10 times faster than current 3G network speeds. The obvious benefit of this is that you’ll be able to do things faster, consume more media on your device and work harder – although not necessarily in that order.

O2’s trial of this new network will run for the next nine months with over 1000 consumers and businesses taking part.

Ronan Dunne, Chief Executive Officer of Telefónica UK (O2), said: “O2 has been at the heart of the mobile data explosion over the last three years and our priority has always been to build ahead of the curve,” continued Ronan Dunne. “Our work in London will give us a better understanding of the capabilities of 4G technology and will allow us to explore the superfast benefits it will bring to people and industry across the UK. This 4G trial is the next step on our journey to a smarter network – a network that offers a seamless, connected experience across multiple devices, locations and services”.

It will still be several years before 4G networks are generally available but it is a big step-forward for the industry and we look forward to the outcome of the trial.
