Windows 8 to be unveiled in ‘three flavours’

Microsoft has announced that Windows 8 will be unveiled in just three versions as the firm looks to simplify its operating system for tablets and PCs.

Business users with Intel-based machines will be able to access two different versions, Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro.

Those using ARM-designed chips, such as tablets, will be using the Windows RT version of the operating system.

The new operating system will make the 'tile' format, which was showcased in the Windows Phone 7, available across multiple platforms.

Windows 8 Pro has been created with professionals in mind, as it comes with a broader set of technologies, including encryption, virtualisation, PC management and domain connectivity.

The RT version will be available only pre-installed on PCs and tablets and boasts touch-optimised desktop versions of the new Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote packages.

Microsoft is expected to launch the operating system later this year, which it hopes will compete with Apple and Google's iOS and Android systems.
