Vodafone launches own brand of 4G smartphone

UK telecoms giant Vodafone has announced that it is to release two new own-brand smartphones specifically designed to handle the demands of its superfast 4G network.

The Vodafone Smart 4 power and Vodafone Smart 4 turbo will join other non-4G devices in the company’s ‘Smart’ range.

Both of the new models will run Android 4.4 and will be equipped with a set-up wizard, as well as a number of apps exclusive to Vodafone.

The flagship Vodafone Smart 4 power boasts a five-inch qHD screen, along with a five-megapixel camera and a MediaTek 1.3GHz quad-core processor.

Meanwhile, the Vodafone Smart 4 turbo is set to be the cheapest 4G smartphone model in its range, coming at a prices of just €99 (approx £79).

At that price, it is a model that is sure to appeal to consumers and businesses alike.

However, that does not mean that it compromises on the features needed to ensure top-quality performance.

The Smart 4 turbo contains a 4.5-inch screen and a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, making it a great choice.

Patrick Chomet, Vodafone group terminals director, said “The new Vodafone smartphones are ideal for anyone looking for the best 4G experience at a budget price. Put the Vodafone Smart power or turbo together with our Vodafone 4G plans and you have the perfect package: ultra-fast 4G networks, generous data, call and text allowances, and great support.”

There has not been any confirmation regarding the availability of both handsets in the UK, although analysts expect the models to be released over the course of the next few weeks.

Vodafone claims that both of the new models will be able to compete with the best. Whether this claim is eventually validated remains to be seen.

The release of the phones will be just the latest part of the network's strategy for 4G.

Vodafone recently elected Alcatel-Lucent to supply it with metro cells with integrated WIFI, as part of a £1 billion project to increase its 4G coverage across the UK.
