Vodafone hits new 4G milestone amid continued growth

Vodafone has announced that the number of subscribers to its superfast mobile broadband 4G service has now surpassed 500,000.

The network has reached this significant milestone after just six months and now claims that its fourth-generation services are now available to 36 per cent of the UK population.

Such a tremendous level of growth means that Vodafone has reached the this mark faster than industry rival EE, which launched back in October 2012 and hit the half-a-million mark about a year later.

Since its launch, Vodafone has continued to build on its 4G network, which now offers coverage for 208 towns and cities in the UK.

As well offering customers attractive data allowances along with extras such as Spotify, Vodafone has also outlined plans that could potentially see it become the world's largest 4G roaming network by enabling plans to roll out the service in 18 countries from summer 2014 at no extra cost to current 3G customers.

Vodafone Group chief commercial and operations officer Paolo Bertoluzzo  said: “Much faster, simpler to use and often less expensive than typical, hotel wi-fi connections anywhere in Europe, 4G roaming will give our customers high-speed connections for video, music streaming, web surfing, working and much more anywhere, from the airport to the cafe.”

But Vodafone is not the only network to have made great progress with its 4G offering, as O2 has also announced measures that should see its fourth-generation service make great strides.

The network is to offer customers with a 4G-enabled handset on a 3G contract an upgrade to the new service at no extra cost.

O2  claims that around one million of its customers have a 4G phone, but has not yet commented on how many customers would be contacted.

The company said in a statement: “Last December we launched some new Pay Monthly 4G tariffs, making it easy for customers to experience O24G. As part of this we’re also helping existing customers who have purchased a 4G-Ready handsets from us by adding our 4G service onto their 3G tariff at no extra cost, so they can experience some of the great benefits of O2 4G."
