UK top of global 4G rankings

The UK has been named as the country with the fastest 4G speeds in the world.

Data gathered by the quarterly State of the Internet report from Akamai found that Brits are now enjoying an average mobile connection speed of 20.4Mbps.

That is a 27 per cent increase when compared to the previous quarter, and is also higher than the 15Mbps that was recently cited by industry regulator Ofcom.

Denmark was the second country in the rankings, boasting an average speed of 10Mbps, while neighbouring Sweden mustered up an average of 8.9Mbps.

Russia came in with a speed of 7.5Mbps, while the US only managed a disappointing 4Mbps.

Vietnam recorded the lowest average speed, recording just 1.3Mbps.

While the UK emerged top of the pile for average speeds, the highest recorded speed on a one-off basis was in Australia, which saw the fastest peak connection come in a 149.3Mbps, compared to the UK's 90.9Mbps.

The report found that 95 per cent of current mobile broadband connections across the UK were offering speeds of over 4Mbps.

Akamai's David Belson, editor of the report, said the results indicated a demand among consumers for a higher standard of connectivity.

He added: "While connectivity will continue to differ across many regions, we see the highest broadband speeds in countries/regions with high population densities and strong government backing or support, as well as those that foster competition among internet providers."
