Smartphone market to remain segmented as no one platform dominates

The current competition in the smartphone operating system market is fierce as Android and iOS battle it out for supremacy in the industry.

According to David Akka, UK managing director for MagicSoftware.com, said that no-one platform is currently dominating the market.

"You can come and say 'Apple and iOS are more profitable, but Android has far better market share' but in two or three year's time, we don't really know how that will develop."

He explained that iOS will probably remain profitable and competitive in the coming years and Android will still boast a large market share.

Mr Akka noted that the current segmentation of the market is "just the beginning" of a much larger segmentation that will occur when tablets, HD TVs and the car market are taken into account.

"On some fronts, Android will be dominant and on other fronts, Apple and iOS will be dominant. But because they're competing with each other, we have that innovation and progression," the expert concluded.
