Poor mobile device management posing security threat for SMBs

Nearly three-quarters (62.5 per cent) of small or medium businesses (SMBs) have experienced a cyber attack within the last 12 months, according to a recent survey conducted by AMI Partners for McAfee.

The research gauged the responses of 200 businesses, and found that around 51.5 per cent claimed to have been the subject of more than one cyber attack.

A total of 78 per cent of the businesses surveyed said they implemented a BYOD policy, but just over half claimed to have any form of antivirus software or mobile device management (MDM) strategy in place.

Robbie Upcroft, SMB lead at McAfee Asia Pacific said: "BYOD is a fascinating area of security as it is changing the face of IT security with the quite justifiable demand of employees to use their own devices for work purposes, that is now opening up enormous amounts of confidential business data to relatively insecure, or even totally insecurity, devices."

Mr Upcroft added that not having a successful MDM policy in place could have devastating effects.

The findings come on the back of a survey conducted by Spiceworks, which was published in May, which suggested that only 37 per cent of SMBs that have adopted a BYOD approach have also deployed MDM.

The report added that these figures came despite the fact that theft or loss of devices, as well as the potential for misuse from employees, represented a significant security threat.

In a statement Spiceworks said: "Companies not actively managing and securing devices are leaving themselves open to intrusion, data theft, unauthorised use and malware infections, which can lead to havoc across a company of any size."

Only 20 per cent of those with no MDM policy claimed that they had plans to deploy one within the next six months, around 56 per cent dismissed any possibility of adopting it at any point in in the future.

It found that even larger businesses appeared slightly unwilling to implement MDM, but that there was still a significant number (46 per cent) with no intention of introducing the idea to their business.
