O2 2G network up-and-running

O2 has announced that its 2G network is back up-and-running after an extended period where users suffered a lack of service.

Thousands of customers were affected and unable to make calls, send text messages or use data for over 17 hours, while users of GiffGaff and Tesco Mobile were also impacted as the providers use O2's infrastructure.

It is still unclear when full service will be resumed, but the network provider has promised it is working hard to resolve the problems.

In an update this morning it said: "We can confirm that our 2G network service has now been restored. Customers who were affected should now be able to make and receive calls."

It also explained that the 3G service is starting to be restored and customers should expect to see a gradual return of data services as the day progresses.

The firm also encouraged users to switch their mobile phones off and on, before apologising for the inconvenience caused to customers that have been affected by the service outage.
