Nokia to launch a range of tablets

Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia is set to take a leap of faith into the tablet market, as it looks to take advantage of its new partnership with Microsoft.

The firm is planning to launch a new range of mobile devices featuring the Windows 8 operating system.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Jorma Ollila, Nokia's chairman, revealed that getting a tablet onto the market is a major step in the recovery of the manufacturer, which was recently knocked off top spot in the smartphone market by Samsung.

"Tablets are an important one, so that is being looked into, and there will be different hybrids, different form," he said, the biggest hint yet that a tablet is in the pipeline.

He noted that the Windows 8 operating system is very interesting and could have a number of uses, but as this is not due to be released until October this year, a Nokia tablet could still be some way off.
