More details of Lumia 650 emerge

When it comes to smartphones, Microsoft has found itself in an unfamiliar position.

Having enjoyed being at the top of the pile in almost all its ventures, its smartphone offering has found competition much tougher.

The company initially looked set to persevere, recently releasing the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL devices.

However, the newly-released Lumia 650 is widely expected to be Microsoft's final release in the Lumia range, which when measured up to the company's massively high standards has been something of a disaster.

The company sold just 4.5 million handsets in the last quarter of 2015, according to its Quarter Two fiscal 2016 earnings report – down from the 10.5 million in the same quarter the year previously.

As well as the fierce competition from rivals, the Lumia line's popularity has been further harmed by the success of the Surface range of tablets, which has seen its own popularity surge in recent months.

The 650 is therefore likely to be the final chapter in Lumia's recent history, with the company expected to come out with the Surface Mobile series of devices.

The Surface Mobile devices will run the Windows 10 OS, with Microsoft Corporation working on a strategy that combines the power of a surface device inside a mobile phone.

In the mean time, a number of images of the Lumia 650 have been leaked already, with a new, metallic body one of several eye-catching features.
