Microsoft fighting back in smartphone market with Nokia Lumia

Microsoft is hoping to fight back against Apple, Google and Samsung with the launch of its Windows 8 phone operating system.

The OS will feature in the Nokia Lumia models, which were launched last week, ahead of the new Apple iPhone 5.

David Akka, UK managing director for MagicSoftware.com, has said that Microsoft is looking to overcome a "less than impressive" record in the smartphone market with the OS and new devices.

"The fight back continues, however, with the Windows 8 platform part of Microsoft's strategy to drive market share by winning the hearts of the consumer and the release of Nokia's Windows 8 phone – which aims to steal a march on the next iPhone launch," he explained.

However, it remains to be seen if the announcement of the operating system and new devices will make a dent in the dominance of Microsoft's rivals.

"Ultimately, the market is by no means won and enterprises and developers need to incorporate strategies to allow the flexibility for future changes, which can accommodate multiple mobile operating systems," he concluded.
