IBM makes informal approach for RIM enterprise

International Business Machine Corp (IBM) is thought to be considering purchasing struggling Research In Motion's (RIM's) enterprise division.

According to Bloomberg reports, two unnamed sources have revealed that IBM has made an informal approach for the part of the business that operates the servers used for supporting BlackBerry email and messaging services.

RIM's chief executive Thorsten Heins recently hired bankers for a strategic review that could include a potential sale and partnerships for its technology.

Bloomberg reported that the BlackBerry maker is yet to receive any offers for its phone business or the company as a whole entity.

BlackBerry has been struggling to maintain its hold in the smartphone market in recent years due to greater competition from Apple and Android, which have taken a vast share of the market, placing RIM in danger.

IBM could face competition from Samsung, after analysts suggested that the South Korean firm may consider a bid, something which it has denied.
