FTTC to boost broadband speeds for ‘majority of people’

Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) is a growing technology in the UK, with the technology looking set to dominate for a number of years.

Andrew Ferguson, editor of thinkbroadband.com, believes that the technology will provide significant improvement in speeds for the majority of people.

"The choice of this technology has been driven by its relatively low-cost to deploy, compared to the more future-proof and faster Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) products."

According to Mr Ferguson, BT is expected to be the likely winner for most of the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) projects.

The government is backing the rollout of faster broadband and culture secretary Jeremy Hunt has claimed that the UK will boast the fastest broadband speed in Europe by 2015.

However, a recent House of Lords report criticised the government for paying too much attention to increasing speeds.

It said that more should be done to ensure that most people in the UK have access to reasonable broadband, rather than focusing on headline speeds.
