Facebook is rumoured to be joining forces with HTC to produce its own smartphone in a bid to make the most out of the number of people who use social media on their mobile devices.

The social media firm has already made various high profile hires from Apple which is believed to be spearheading the new project along with HTC.

Building its own device could allow the site to collect revenue from its existing advertisers more effectively by making sure their commercial content is distributed throughout the phone's different functions.

HTC was the first manufacturer to include a dedicated Facebook button on its handset, with the launch of the Salsa mode l, and now it is looking for a partnership with the social media site in a bid to differentiate its offerings from those of rival Samsung.

In a statement, Facebook said it did not comment on rumour and speculation, although the firm added: "Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We're working across the entire mobile industry to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world."
