BlackBerry to open BB10 to other MDM vendors

Smartphone manufacturer BlackBerry has announced that it is to open up its BB10 operating system to other mobile device management (MDM) vendors.

The decision is thought to be motivated by the company's desire to gain a stronger foothold in the Internet of Things (IoT) market, which is seen as an area where the company could soon flourish.

IoT is something of a rising trend that already contains billions of devices connected on the go, along with consumers seeking information.

Although BB10 has already released its own MDM solution, opening up to other vendors has been touted as one of the main ways in which the company can secure a recovery.

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that they may be onto a good idea, with a recent study from research firm Gartner suggesting that MDM is still a top priority for many  IT buyers, with investment levels growing steadily.

The idea is to help organisations gain more options to embrace multi-operating system mobile environments.

Third-party firms will now be able to directly manage devices with a BB10 operating system, allowing them to lock and wipe data, while also managing apps used for work purposes.

In a statement, BlackBerry said: "AirWatch, Citrix and IBM have expressed their intent to be the first companies to work with BlackBerry to enable a more open mobility ecosystem."

BlackBerry's head of global enterprise services business, John Sims said: "BlackBerry is more than just an EMM (Enterprise Mobility Management) provider or a handset provider. We are uniquely positioned to be a major player in the multi-trillion dollar Internet of Things market."

He added:  "With BES12 planned for late this calendar year, we will continue to support iOS, Android, Windows, BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS devices."

The move comes amid news of BlackBerry's decision to introduce its multi-tenant cloud version of BES12 by March 2015.

The new program will help offer more opportunities to win customers and maintain its market leading position.
