BlackBerry appoints new MD to improve UK operation

Research In Motion (RIM) has appointed a new managing director in the UK and Ireland ahead of the launch of its new BlackBerry 10 operating system (OS).

Rob Orr will step up from his current role as vice president of product management for EMEA region to replace the outgoing Stephen Bates, who is set to take on the regional managing director role in Europe.

According to a statement from the company, Mr Orr will be given the task of ensuring RIM is "optimally structured to be fully focused on selling BlackBerry 7 smartphones and BlackBerry Mobile Fusion, and is prepared and ready for the launch of BlackBerry 10".

The new appointment comes at a difficult time for the manufacturer, as the launch of the new OS has been delayed until the start of 2013.

BlackBerry has been struggling to compete in the smartphone market in the UK, taking just 11 per cent of the market, compared to Apple's 19 per cent and Android's 15 per cent.

It is hoped the launch of the new OS and devices will help the manufacturer gain ground on its main competitors.
