BlackBerry 10 a hit with UK smartphone users

The new operating system from BlackBerry, which was launched at the end of January has proved a hit with early adopters.

Chief executive of the Canadian company, Thorsten Heins, introduced the new OS alongside two new smartphones, the touch-screen Z10 and the Q10, which comes with a physical keyboard.

The UK was earmarked as the launch market for the Z10 and so far the response to the device and its new platform has been positive from professionals.

Mr Heins noted that the new model has already sold out in the UK, as demand has been better than expected, figures which he noted give him the confidence that the company, which also changed its name at the end of January, will make up ground it lost to Apple in recent years.

Mr Heins said a substantial number of UK users are moving from other platforms to BlackBerry and said that is an encouraging sign because they first targeted long-time BlackBerry users.

"It's beyond expectations. White is sold out already. The black is hard to stock up again. It's very encouraging.

"I won't share the number because I need to verify it, but we are getting a substantial number of users moving from other platforms to BlackBerry. That is an interesting data point."

Many professionals in the UK have moved to the new devices due to the added security benefits of the new platform, following the announcement of a partnership between BlackBerry and Trend Micro Incorporated, a global leader in cloud security.

The deal will help to increase the protection BlackBerry provides to business users against malware, privacy issues and third-party applications.

Adrian Stone, director, BlackBerry Security Response and Threat Analysis at BlackBerry, said: "BlackBerry is working with Trend Micro to implement a more robust approach for addressing privacy and security concerns related to third-party applications.

"By incorporating Trend Micro's advanced mobile scanning and detection capabilities with our own internal, proprietary application analysing system, we can provide another layer of protection and assurance for BlackBerry customers."
