Some 60 per cent of enterprises have reported that they will run the majority of their IT outside of enterprise data centres by the end of 2019, mainly using off-premises service provider environments, such as public cloud infrastructure and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).

This is according to 451 Research, which has put together its inaugural Voice of the Enterprise (VotE) Digital Pulse.

The survey found that IT leaders are embracing a new model of service-orientated IT solutions and that they will be looking to leverage data in new ways to differentiate themselves in 2018.

However, the survey also found that IT companies’ ability to exploit digital transformation is uneven, with more than 60 per cent of organisations having no formal transformation strategy in place. Meanwhile, 451 Research said that a number of businesses have reported facing challenges in achieving optimal business-IT alignment.

The survey revealed that the largest spending increase in 2018 will be on IT delivered as a service, which will take place “at the expense of the traditional on-premises model”. 451 Research also said information security is high on the IT agenda of enterprises, with 16 per cent of organisations saying that area is getting the largest budget increase.

In 2018, the survey found, business intelligence and analytics will be the top IT priorities for companies (45 per cent), while machine learning and artificial intelligence will be second (29 per cent) and Big Data third (28 per cent).

Melanie Posey, research vice president and general manager of VotE at 451 Research, said: “The survey suggests that many – but certainly not all – organisations are finally reaching the point where they can focus on endeavours that help differentiate the business, instead of merely keeping the lights on. In 2018 we expect to see much of this effort focused around a new set of approaches to data optimisation and analysis.”
