Nokia has announced it is expanding its flagship optical product family in order to help operators build end-to-end cloud service delivery networks.

According to the company, the new solutions and capabilities will allow operators to scale their networks across premises access, metro aggregation and long-haul data centre interconnect (DCI).

Nokia explained that as enterprises adopt cloud IT services at a rapid pace and digital media dominates consumer entertainment, cloud and content providers are evolving their networks to ensure a better user experience.

The company added that this increasingly involves distributing content and online services from continental mega data centres to metro and regional edge data centres and co-location facilities. There, the user experience is improved via lower latency and higher access bandwidth.

Nokia said it is helping network operators build these end-to-end, high-capacity cloud connectivity networks with an expansion of the 1830 family of products. These will include carrier ethernet and wavelength services delivery with the 1830 Photonic Service Demarcation (PSD), as well as high performance DCI in the 1830 Photonic Service Interconnect (PSI). The new capabilities are to be made available in the first half of 2017.

Nokia's new optical innovations include the 1830 PSD, which is a carrier-class network demarcation device supporting ethernet and wavelength services. Its intention is to cost-effectively “extend metro optical networks to the customer premise, enabling resilient, high-capacity access to cloud services while providing end-to-end service assurance”.

The Nokia 1830 PSI is also being introduced. It aims to integrate the technology of the Photonic Service Engine 2 into a data centre physical and operational form-factor, delivering the highest proven optical performance and flexibility available in a purpose-built DCI platform.
