Data loss will have different knock-on consequences depending on the business

There will be different knock-on effects for companies not protecting and securing their data, according to an expert.

Alex Fidgen, director at MWR InfoSecurity, said that it all depends on what is important to the individual business, whether it be reputational damage or a loss of revenue.

"There are differing levels of consequences depending on the make-up of the company, how the revenue is generated, what kind of data assets there are [and] whether or not the tangible assets are intact like reputation and brand name and so forth – it's complicated," he noted.

Mr Fidgen noted that the fallout is quite hard to measure with the new generation of threats as it is not always immediately apparent that data is being stolen.

Increasingly, threats to personal information could occur through the cloud, with TomorrowToday claiming that users are taking advantage of the technology for many different things.

Many are using the cloud to back-up their data incase the host computer becomes infected, damaged or compromised.
