Cloud services market to grow 20% in 2012, says Gartner

The continued growth of the cloud services market in 2012 could see the market being worth $109 billion (£67 billion) by the end of the year, according to new research.

A report from Gartner revealed a near 20 per cent growth is expected thanks to the continued success of infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and software as a service (SaaS).

The researchers predicted that strong gains in business process services (BPaas) will account for $84.2 billion in 2012 as it represents 77 per cent of the market.

Ed Anderson, research director at Gartner, said: "The total public cloud services market size in 2011 was $91.4 billion, and it will grow to $206.6 billion in 2016. As the market grows, IaaS will become a larger part of the overall market, while the market share of cloud management and security services will grow as well."

He added that when targeting specific markets in the cloud services marketplace, evaluation of potential market size and growth rates should be undertaken.
