BlackBerry Torch 9800 – A Fantastic Step Forward

BlackBerry Torch 9800 – A Fantastic Step Forward

Having now had the time to use the BlackBerry Torch 9800 for a week or so then the view from the Arrow tech team is that it’s a fantastic step forward for the BlackBerry range. In particular the new operating system OS6 feels more intutive with frequently used or favourite applications falling readily to hand.  Combined with a clear display and a capacitive touchscreen, it really takes the BlackBerry to the next level!

Some of the key developments experienced by the tech team include: –

  • Search Functionality – With the search now being built into the home screen looking for information on your device has never been easier. Just slide open the BlackBerry and type what you are looking for, and it brings up all the available options within all of the various menus. What’s especially good is how the search functionality integrates into your third party apps like poynt helping you use location based services more effectively.
  • Web Browser – A vast improvement over the last few browsers although it feels and interacts very much like the modern iPhone or Android browsers with pinch to zoom and tabbed browsing.  We Love the way you now get a full web page rather than a cut down version designed for mobile browsers. Text is legible at all font sizes
  • Capacitive touch screen – the screen is a lot better than previous touch screen BlackBerrys where you had to press the screen down to confirm your selection. No longer do you have to press just touch the area or the icon on the screen and your selection is made. The screen is bright, responsive and when watching a film surprisingly clear.
  • Front screen shortcuts – Clicking the top of the screen  quickly allows you to manage connections, set alarm and set up other service options like WiFi, this is a great shortcut.  We especially like the fact that if you click the new message icon (or between the profile and magnified glass) it will display your last 3 unopened messages from all mailboxes, next 3 upcoming calendar appointments and last 3 phone calls.
  • Choice of Input methods – The fact that you can navigate around the device using the capacitive touch screen, and choose whether to type using the on-screen keyboard for short entries, or flip out the full qwerty BlackBerry keyboard, which is in itself excellent with the right amount of give and feedback.
  • Social Feeds – this app is great for having a quick glance at all of your social media feeds and saves a lot of time flicking between each application.
  • Battery Life – We’ve noticed that a full charge will last about 8 hours. If you are a power user then you may need to recharge the device during the day, as otherwise it may not stay charged for the whole evening if you go out.
