UK first secretary of state Damian Green has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to establishing the UK as a global cyber security leader.

The UK’s first secretary of state Damian Green has marked the first anniversary of the creation of the National Cyber Security Strategy (NCSS) at the opening of the new global headquarters of security firm the NCC Group in Manchester.

Speaking at the event, he said the government plans to secure the UK’s position as a global cyber security leader.

The NCSS was launched in response to growing cyber security challenges and threats faced by the UK, as well as to define the government’s ambitions for the future. As part of this strategy, the government invested some £1.9 billion to establish the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

Since its launch, the NCSC has responded to 1,131 cyber incidents, with 590 of them being classified significant. The organisation provides support to cyber attack victims, sharing information with intelligence and law enforcement, and setting up incident management structures to ensure essential services are up and running once incidents have occurred.

Mr Green said: “This government is committed to tackling the growing threat of cyber security and will continue to invest in the future of our defence programme.”

Speaking about the government’s commitment to boosting the UK’s global standing in the world, he pointed to the Cyber Schools programme, which aims to provide skills to nearly 6,000 young people. This was established in order “to secure the UK’s position as a world leader in cyber security for generations to come,” Mr Green said.

Brian Tenner, interim CEO at NCC Group, added: “The threat of cyber crime is an ever-evolving issue that is increasing in severity every day. It is encouraging that the UK government is treating this as a priority and putting concrete strategies in place to address this.”
