Smartphone manufacturers BlackBerry and Bullitt Group have announced they are to join forces to develop new highly-secure rugged mobile devices aimed at security-conscious enterprise users.
The gadgets, to be certified as BlackBerry Secure, will be embedded by Bullitt Group into a range of enterprise and industrial applications, including rugged Cat and Land Rover branded products intended for use anywhere from construction sites to mountain rescue.
The BlackBerry Secure platform offers a highly secure and comprehensive software solution to help connect people, devices, and systems. Items with the BlackBerry Secure licence provide users with a deeply embedded security solution based on BlackBerry's proprietary software and applications. These aim to safeguard end-user privacy and protects enterprises from attackers looking to exploit device vulnerabilities.
Alex Thurber, senior-vice-president and general manager of Mobility Solutions at BlackBerry, said the deal will expand the footprint of BlackBerry Secure to over more than 100 markets around the world where Bullitt Group distributes its products, including Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
"Bullitt Group's customers, from farmers and construction workers to outdoor enthusiasts, will now be able to have rugged products that aren’t just durable on the outside, but also strong on security on the inside," he stated.
Chief product officer at Bullitt Group James Shannon added that the partnership will allow users of Cat and Land Rover vehicles the high level of security needed for peace of mind when they are communicating and sharing with their devices, whether this is for business or pleasure.
Explaining the decision to team up with business-oriented smartphone maker BlackBerry for the devices, Mr Shannon said: "With the rising threat of hacks and security breaches in mobile and connected IoT devices, it was important for us to find a partner that can help us keep pace with, and protect against, the fast-changing security challenges that concern our customers."
