Set for launch this autumn, iOS 13 will offer users a “dramatic” new look for iPhone users, as well as new ways to browse their content, improved maps functionality and a more private way to access apps and websites.

Introducing the platform at WWDC, Apple’s senior vice-president of software engineering Craig Federighi said it will “bring new capabilities to the apps you use every day, with rich updates to Photos and Maps, and privacy-protecting features like Sign In with Apple, all while delivering faster performance.”

Among the most noticeable features is a new Dark Mode, which offers a new user interface experience across all native apps to deliver a better experience in low-light conditions. Dark Mode is available to third-party app developers for integration into their own apps and can be scheduled to turn on automatically at sunset or at a certain time.

When it comes to security, iOS 13 will also offer users a new way of signing in to apps and mobile website that does not require them to fill out forms, verify an email address or choose a password.

Instead, users will be able to use their existing Apple ID to authenticate themselves, with the company protecting users’ identity by providing developers with a unique random ID.

“Even in cases where developers choose to ask for a name and email address, users have the option to keep their email address private and share a unique random email address instead,” Apple stated.

In addition, Sign In with Apple will make it easy for users to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID and includes built-in two-factor authentication for an additional layer of security.

Other features introduced by Apple include a new option for browsing photos that uses machine learning to curate the best images, a range of new and enhanced photo editing tools, and an overhaul of Apple Maps to add more street-level detail.

“We’re excited for customers to experience what’s coming to iPhone this fall and can’t wait for them to see how great everything looks in Dark Mode,” Mr Federighi continued.
